Breaking the Silence: Mental Health Awareness

Mental Health Awareness Month is celebrated in May for the US, and in October for Australia, a time to shine a light on the importance of mental health and well-being for individuals, families, and communities. It’s also a chance to break the stigma surrounding mental illness and encourage open conversations about a topic that affects us all.

Why Mental Health Awareness Matters

Mental health conditions affect 1 in 5 people each year, yet many still face barriers to seeking help. These barriers often include stigma, lack of resources, or simply not recognizing the signs of mental distress. Mental Health Awareness Month aims to:

  • Educate the public about common mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

  • Promote early intervention, as timely support can significantly improve outcomes.

  • Encourage empathy, reminding everyone that mental health struggles are a shared human experience.

Whether you’re part of the care industry or simply someone who wants to make a difference, here are a few ways to support mental health:

  • Listen with empathy: Sometimes, a listening ear can make all the difference.

  • Educate yourself: Understanding mental health conditions helps break down stigma.

  • Encourage help-seeking: Let friends and loved ones know that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

This year, we’re taking part in The Push Up Challenge - we’re aiming to complete 3,124 push ups in 23 days in June. This number represents the number of people that had passed away due to suicide in 2023. Let’s push for better mental health awareness!
