The Power of Music: A Heartfelt Community Session at Our Head Office
Rey and Ceazar uplifting our participants with song
Today, our Head Office and Community Hub came alive with the sounds of music, joy, and connection during a very special community participation event.
Facilitated by Susan and two other generous volunteers from a local church, the session opened with a warm welcome and a powerful message about the role of music in healing—particularly its impact on individuals living with Alzheimer's and Dementia.

Recent research supports this. Studies show that music activates more parts of the brain than any other activity. It can reduce anxiety, evoke memories, and encourage emotional expression—even in people with limited verbal communication. According to the Alzheimer’s Research & Therapy Journal (2023), music therapy can support cognitive functioning and improve quality of life for people with Alzheimer’s. An article from ScienceAlert further explains how music has a profound effect on people with dementia, sometimes unlocking moments of connection and lucidity.
We saw that impact firsthand.
One of our NDIS participants, Leilani, who is typically non-responsive, began mouthing the lyrics to a familiar tune.
Another participant, Harold, lit up with joy as the two guitarists began strumming the classic Filipino song,
“Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko” ("Even When My Hair Turns White").
Harold even brought his own keyboard and joined in, jamming along to Imagine by John Lennon and Let It Be by The Beatles.
One particularly moving moment was when Felipe —who is usually wheelchair-bound—felt so uplifted by the music that he stood up and danced with the support of our caring team. It was a great, shared moment that reminded us how deeply music can reach into the human spirit.
“I’m happy to just dance with you” - The Beatles
Felipe asked our support workers to dance to music with him.
The energy was contagious. Aged care consumers and NDIS participants alike joined in singing, clapping, and smiling together. We left our doors open, and the music drew in curious passers-by—some of whom asked for a pamphlet after hearing the joyful sounds from outside.
This session reminded us that connection doesn’t always need words. Sometimes, all it takes is a song.
We’re grateful to our volunteers for sharing their time and talent, and to our participants for sharing their voices and presence.
